It only seemed fair as we approach the end of October and the festive season that is Halloween for the Men's team to give top team in the League, Walcountians a little scare on their home turf.
We have rightly returned to the time of using imagination and wild speculation of events to write this report - it was a short lived foray into accurate reporting but honestly no one really cares how the goals were scored just that scored they were!
With that out the way... let's get to it.
A few months ago Walcountains didn't exist but as a result of a merger between Blues and East Grinstead Lacrosse Club they appeared out of the Aether like Dark Elves coming to wreak havoc on a peaceful SEMLA Div 1. They would always field a strong team at home so Cheltenham's tactic for the 11 strong headed to London were to contain them as much as possible.
First whistle and Cheltenham didn't just contain but started to dominate the boys in blue. I believe the words 'unnerving' and 'ferocity' were used to describe Cheltenham's shut out first quarter.
Jake Troth found the back of the net twice with Tyler Rodberg also scoring to make it 3 - 0 to the good guys (Cheltenham incase you needed help deciding!)
The Counts obviously had a rousing team talk at quarter time and proceeded to shut out Cheltenham for the 2nd quarter and snuck in two goals of their own. Ending the half 3 - 2 still in favour of Cheltenham.
A nail biter of a 3rd quarter saw James Cole and Erin Tufnell on the scoresheet and James Lloyd having an absolute DAY in goal eating up shots faster than a hungry Packman. Tying out the quarter at 5 -5 and looking like Cheltenham might be the team to finally dethrone the Counts.
A lack of subs, injuries and outstanding hustle unfortunately tool its toll for Cheltenham in the dying minutes of the 4th quarter. Walcountians finally decided to show up to their own game and stepped up the pressure. Opening 'up the Cheltenham defence that had been so tough to break down all game' (Their words!) 4 separate goal scorers from the Counts saw the scoreline tick away in their favour for a 5 - 9 final score.
An absolutely outstanding display of lacrosse from the Cheltenham players with grit and determination all over the field in what was a so nearly winnable game! Its going to be a good one when we welcome The Counts back to CACSSA for a rematch!
